it snowed last night! or rather, this morning. well weather.co.uk predicted it would. at around 12+am, michelia yelled down the phone that it was snowing and demanded that i change to go out into the snow...'our first snow!!!!'

well, i was lazy. i just threw my parka over and walked to her flat in my pjs. i was waiting for michelia at the reception and when she arrived, she asked incredulously 'why are you shivering and chattering?' well her question was answered soon enough when she went out into the cold! i heard from the guys staying at Henderson that they were up till 2am in the morning having snowball fights and making snow angels. haha
_______

silly me forgot to set my alarm properly and i overslept, waking at at 8.30am for my 9am lesson (i have to take a bus and walk quite a distance to reach the university). the slushy snow made it difficult for me to rush to class, and i was late for about 10 mins. the one thing about being the only Chinese in a class made up entirely of Caucasians, is that it makes you extremely conspicuous. also, the fact that the lecture's packed to the brim makes it doubly difficult for latecomers to find or get into a seat (my classes are mainly held in lecture theatres with benches rather than individual seats).

i had my Literature seminar next, in the professor's office. talk about intimacy in class. this is how NUS should operate - we had only 7 or 8 of us gathered. around the table, discussing Tennyson's In Memoriam. trouble is, the prof changed the selection of poems for discussion and i obviously wasn't prepared because i didn't buy the text (i borrowed one from him in the end). next week - next week i promise i'll be more prepared and engage in some intellectual discussion about Maud. if i can decipher their Newcastle accent. sigh.

_______

i met up with sheunming after our classes and we took a bus down to MetroCentre to meet the girls & Jivan. we had a late lunch at Richardo's.

i'm told that taking photos of people taking photos is a sheunming thing. and this is jivan proudly parading his Man Utd jersey at Newcastle. doh.

sheunming's fish & chips,

jivan's chicken and chips,

the girls' gammon and chips,

and chicken kiev. the meals were 2 for 7 pounds, so the girls ordered 2 meals to share among the 3 of us.

after walking round and round the huge Metrocenter, we walked in the cold to Ikea to have dinner.

hrm. there's something wrong with the British pricing strategies. the kids meal is 1pound and has 5 meatballs (picture is missing 1). the adult meal is 2.75pounds and has 10 meatballs. so it would be cheaper (and more logical) to get 2 kids meals. that's what sheunming did and the guy serving him shot him a dirty look. michelia apparently has more charm because she got away with ordering 2 (1 for me) as well. and because one could refill the glass of soft drink, we bought only one glass to share among the five of us. you can imagine the sight - not too pretty. dinner was pretty entertaining because jivan was experimenting with hokkien and using his newfound knowledge in naming the meatballs.

we found colourful and cheery ikea plastic bags for 79p and wanted to get them as laundry bags...

until we discovered the conventional HUGE blue ikea bag for 25p. cheapos we are.

and finally, on the way home after a long day out.

and in the midst of writing this post, it started snowing again. brrr, i'm shivering. well, there'll be a pretty sight to wake up to tomorrow morning! :)
